(Fort Lauderdale, FL) – September 30, 2015 — The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLiFF) welcomes aboard presenting sponsors Seminole Hard Rock and Zimmerman Advertising as they announce the official line-up of the 30th Anniversary Festival, November 6 – 22, 2015. During this anniversary year FLiFF showcases a dynamic selection of more than 150 films from American Independent and World Cinema. Studded with exciting competitions and awards, this seventeen-day cinematic celebration overflows with entertaining, audience pleasing films, dazzling Red Carpet Premieres and Galas and a stellar guest list of special guest celebrities and filmmakers.
For 30 years the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival has introduced some of the finest American independent and foreign language films to South Florida audiences, including many Oscar winners such as Volver, Black Swan, The Artist and The Great Beauty. FLiFF has honored many industry greats, among them as Audrey Hepburn, Peter Bogdanovich, Kevin Spacey and Jane Lynch. The Festival has also spotted many promising actors on the verge of becoming stars, such as Jeremy Renner. At its two year-round art cinemas FLiFF presents top new films daily, thus enhancing the festival’s commitment to the South Florida community. The theaters, located in Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood, provide a venue where local filmmakers can screen their projects and where a variety of non-profit organizations can present benefit events and premieres. The 2005 Festival, which took place just days after Hurricane Wilma, demonstrated FLiFF’s commitment to community support. FLiFF’s Cinema Paradiso-Fort Lauderdale regained electricity the first week after the storm provided not only endless hours of entertainment and much-appreciated air-conditioning, but also food and beverages, hot showers (in dressing rooms at the back of theater) and a very memorable Halloween for families. Under the direction of Gregory von Hausch for 27 of its 30 years, FLiFF has become one of the most respected film forums in the industry as well as a top South Florida destination event.
“Thirty is a significant milestone for FLiFF, says Gregory von Hausch, President and CEO of FLiFF. “As we reflect on our achievements, past films and special guests we also look forward to exciting new programs during the festival and throughout the coming year, Since I began this journey in 1987, American Indies have come a long way. They’re better written, produced and realized and they’ve gained tremendous popularity. Our selections of Indies this year are certain to wow audiences. My personal favorites are foreign language films, which tend to be overshadowed by the Indies. To better showcase them, we’re bringing back a version of Around The World in 80 Nights, a program that we presented a few years ago that pairs films from different countries with native cuisine, art and music. We’re looking forward to a great 30th Anniversary year and we hope South Florida will experience these truly wonderful films,” added von Hausch.
The cinematic adventure gets started in advance of the Festival itself with two Pre-Festival Screenings: the Florida Premiere of Brooklyn, written by Nick Hornby (About A Boy, Wild) and the U.S. Premiere of Single In South Beach, starring Kevin Sorbo, Carlos Ponce and Haley Webb, on Wednesday, November 4. Single In South Beach directors Alejandro Itkin and Hunter Carson will walk the red carpet at the film’s premiere.
OPENING NIGHT FILMS
This year FLiFF features three opening night films, all outstanding American independent cinema, all screening on Friday, November 6.
In Where To Invade Next, the new documentary from Academy Award-winning director Michael Moore, the controversial culture warrior tells the Pentagon to “stand down” — he will do the invading for America from now on. What if the US could do a better job at invading? That’s the question which sends Moore on an epic journey. Florida Premiere. Special Guest: Michael Moore. The Boat Builder stars Christopher Lloyd, (Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and TV sitcom Taxi) as Abner, an embittered old mariner, a widower living a solitary life in a small maritime town, finding comfort only in the countless hours spent building a sailboat. When Rick, a neglected young orphan, hides from the local bullies on Abner’s property, the grumpy old man and the vulnerable boy find common ground and form an unlikely bond which will change their lives in unexpected ways.

Directed by Paul Marchand and produced by Metallica’s Robert Trujillo, Jaco uses never-before-seen 8mm film, photographs, and audio recordings to unveil the true story behind the legend of musician Jaco Pastorius. Born in Oakland Park [Broward County], the self-taught, larger-than-life Pastorius single-handedly changed the course of modern music by redefining the sound and the role of the electric bass guitar. Jaco’s life, his music, and his heartbreaking end are chronicled by footage and photography from the Pastorius family archive; interviews with Joni Mitchell, Carlos Santana, Sting and Flea (of the Red Hot Chili Peppers), and footage of Billy Joel, Stephen Stills, and many other artists.

CENTERPIECE FILM
George Hamilton, Valerie Perrine, Alex Rocco, Barbara Bain, Mariette Hartley, Howard Hesseman, Jack McGee, and Jack Betts star in Silver Skies, the story of a group of neighbors whose lives are turned upside down when their beloved apartment complex is suddenly sold out from under them. CLOSING NIGHT FILM
Obsessed with mob culture and desperate to fit in, Thomas, the title character of The Wannabe, sets out to fix the 1992 trial of mob boss John Gotti. Thomas believes if his plan is executed, it will put him at the center of all that he idolizes. But the plot is foiled, setting off events worthy of mob lore. The Wannabe intertwines real people and true events, past and present, and fantasy – and features Patricia Arquette, in a magnificent performance that many believe tops her Oscar-winning performance in Boyhood.

Florida-based director Victor Nunez (Yulee’s Gold, A Flash of Green) will be presented with the Florida Prize at the Saturday, August 21st 6:30pm Awards Gala at the Diplomat Resort & Spa. He and actor Ed Harris and will attend a tribute screening of A Flash of Green at Cinema Paradiso-Fort Lauderdale earlier in the day.
Michael Moore (Roger & Me, Fahrenheit 9/11, Bowling for Columbine) will make his fifth appearance at FLiFF at the Opening Night screening of his latest film, Where To Invade Next, on Friday, November 6th at the Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock.
TRIBUTE SCREENINGS
FLiFF pays homage to timeless movie classics – and the people who made them – at several Tribute Screenings: A Flash of Green (Saturday, November 21 at Cinema Paradiso – Fort Lauderdale) director Victor Nunez and star Ed Harris will attend; American Graffiti (Saturday, November 14 at Cinema Paradiso – Fort Lauderdale) star and Career Achievement Honoree, Candy Clark, will introduce and lead a post-screening Q&A; and Bonnie and Clyde (Saturday, November 14 at Sunrise Civic Center) Oscar Winner Estelle Parsons will be present to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. Film Historian and Author, Foster Hirsch will interview Ms. Parsons on-stage.

AMERICAN INDIE FILM HIGHLIGHTS
Discovering and presenting excellent American independent films has long been one of FLiFF’s notable strengths. Some of the highlights of this year’s Festival are: the heartbreaking true story of 3:13 (Florida Premiere). Director David Jaure and star Paul Alexandro will attend; 3rd Street Blackout (Southeast Premiere) the romantic comedy that keeps you in the dark – literally. Directors/star Negin Farsad and Jeremy Redleaf are attending; Baby, Baby, Baby (Florida Premiere) is a bittersweet comedy featuring a host of cameos that include Jessica Albo and Bradley Cooper; The Beautiful Ones (Florida Premiere) an action adventure thriller, with writer/director Jesse V. Johnson attending. Cassanova Was a Woman (Florida Premiere) is the life altering comedy. Star Jezabel Montero is attending. Look Again (World Premiere) a comedy about a man who is gifted by his guardian angel with special pair of glasses. Director Daniel O’Connor will attend. The Morning After (Florida Premiere) is a series of vignettes where 8 couples wake up in bed together and make a decision to stay or go. Director Shanra J. Kehl is to attend; Songs My Brothers Taught Me (Florida Premiere) is a compelling modern tale of two native American teenagers that received a standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival; Truck 20’s Location (World Premiere) is suspenseful comedy involving two paramedics. Director Johnathon Amayo and stars Ronnie Marmo and Brak Little will attend; Well Wishes (East Coast Premiere) is a bittersweet comedy. Director Anderson “Drew” Boyd will attend.
WORLD CINEMA FILM HIGHLIGHTS
FLiFF’s World Cinema films are a class apart; each a gem presented in a festive custom setting reflecting the cuisine, music and culture of the film’s country of origin. This year’s features include:
The Southeast Premiere of When Voices Meet: One Divided Country; One United Choir; One Courageous Journey Across South Africa. Threatened with bombs and thwarted at every turn, a 500-voice multiracial choir prevailed and railroaded across the country aboard The Peace Train to break through apartheid’s barriers. (Saturday, November 21) The film is preceded by a live performance by several members of the choir.
Israeli Day features three films from Israel and a special event at the Sunrise Civic Center. (Sunday, November 15) Inspired by a true story, The Wonders combines genres, moods and influences – everything from film noir to Alice in Wonderland – to create a unique and compelling movie that mixes mystery, comedy, psychological thriller, political intrigue and romance. Apples from Desert (Florida Premiere) nominated for three Israeli Academy Awards, is an adaptation of the award-winning Israeli play that poignantly explores themes of love and reconciliation. Hill Start (Florida Premiere), a comedic drama tells the story of a bourgeois family from Jerusalem. After a car accident, the mother of the family goes into a coma. The family members try to bring her back in every way possible. Along the way you’ll meet some interesting characters.
Some people would kill for 3 Days In Havana, a film with a Hitchcockian flair, the wised-up dialogue of old film noir; and the gritty detail and sharp plot twists of contemporary thrillers. This Second Look Screening is preceded by a Cuba Libre Party featuring Cuban food, Cuban rum and directors Gil Bellows and Tony Pantages. (Sunday, November 8)
The French Consul General in Miami will be the special guest at Viva la France, the Francophile party following the U.S. Premiere of Le Pere Noel. The comedy takes place on Christmas Eve in Paris. Parents are putting their children to bed or shuffling off to parties. But Santa Claus, a cat burglar is at work. His first target of the night brings a surprise that will follow him throughout his rounds.
Other internationally themed World Cinema events featuring special guests include: A Tree Without Roots (World Premiere), paired with the India Intrigue party, the film follows a young writer on a transformational journey through India as he searches for his dying father he has never met. Writer/director Christopher Lovic and co-writer Christian Ducale are attending; Boccaccerias Habaneras (Southeast Premiere) proceeded by the Cuba Conga Party, is a bawdy, outrageous, hilarious, look at day-to-day lives of our neighbors to the south. Director Arturo Sotto and actress Zulema Cruz are attending.
Additional film and party pairings include: the hysterically funny Latin Lover (U.S. Premiere) with the Italiano Paisano Fest; Argentine crime thriller Betibu (Southeast Premiere) with Awake In Argentina party; The Secret of Italia (World Premiere) complemented by the Italia Secret Party, is inspired by true events and told through the eyes of a 15 year old girl, Italia; the charming cross-cultural romance,Tokyo Fiancee (Southeast Premiere) is paired with the Japan JumpUp party; A Scandinavian Scandal party is set between the Florida Premieres of Danish director Dagur Kári’s Virgin Mountain, a quirky compassionate story of a very large man with an even bigger heart and director Paula van der Oest’s Accused, a psychological thriller, based on one of the most controversial court cases in the Netherlands. Mexican rom-com, Casese Quien Pueda (East Coast Premiere) is followed by the Mexican Madness party
AMERICAN DOCUMENTARY HIGHLIGHTS
The Festival’s tradition of showcasing American documentaries is as strong as ever in this anniversary year. Highlights include:
Plundering America and Going Hungry two short documentaries produced by teams from the South Florida Sun Sentinel will screen, provoking strong opinions which will be aired during panel discussions following each film.
A Director Prepares: Bobby Roth’s Master Class demystifies the craft of directing and hands over all the tools aspiring filmmakers need to feel comfortable walking onto a set, presented by veteran director Bobby Roth, who will host breakfast and lunch as well as the East Coast Premiere of A Director Prepares on Saturday, November 14.
Two back-to-back screenings tackle environmental issues, building on the film’s exploration of these topics with question & answer sessions with special guests. Battle For the Barriers (Festival Premiere) addresses climate change and environment; speakers scheduled to appear are director Sharon Baker, Manley K. Fuller, President of the Florida Wildlife Federation, and former U.S. Congressman Tom Evans. Penguin Counters (Southeast Premiere) follows Antarctic scientists studying penguins as the key to humankind’s survival. Filmmakers Peter Getzels and Harriet Gordon and biologist Ron Naveen guest.
Back In Time (Southeast Premiere) looks at the cultural impact Back To The Future trilogy has had over the past thirty years. Special guests will address Marty McFly’s significance in a post-screening Q & A.
Narrator Loretta Swit will attend a special Veterans Day screening of Never The Same (Florida Premiere), a film that uses the words and drawings of World War II prisoners of war, recorded in their diaries, to tell the veteran’s stories.
Additional documentary highlights are Right-Footed (Florida Premiere), the story of martial artist, college graduate and motivational speaker, Jessica Cox, born without arms as the result of a severe birth defect; The Anthropologist (Florida Premiere) follows anthropologist Susie Crate on her globe-trotting studies of communities negotiating climate change, with her reluctant teenage daughter, Katie, in tow.
WORLD DOCUMENTARIES
International documentaries broaden FLiFF’s horizons every year. This year’s highlights include:
Liberators: Why We Fought (Germany; North American Premiere) takes viewers on a journey from World War II veterans’ quaint hometowns in the US to the shores of Europe and their final march through Nazi Germany.
Two films from the Bahamas, When Pigs Swim (East Coast Premiere) and Gentle Giant: The Andre Rodgers Story, (South Florida Premiere) play back-to-back, accompanied by question and answer sessions. When Pigs Swim explores the origin of the Swimming Pigs of Grand Exuma; by contrast, Gentle Giant profiles Andre Rogers, a cricketer who became a major league phenomenon on America’s baseball diamonds in the 1950s and 1960s.
Fort Lauderdale takes a featured role in Hurricane 3D, (U.S. Premiere; France) an in-depth examination of the birth and evolution of a storm from the coast of West Africa, across the Atlantic, through the Caribbean and up the Gulf of Mexico before unleashing its fury on the U.S. coast.
In Lost And Found (Florida Premiere; Canada, USA, Japan) beachcombers in North America started finding Japanese items washed ashore following the cataclysmic Japanese earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011 and become obsessed with finding the item’s owners, eventually traveling to Japan hoping to reunite people with some small piece of their past.
When Giants Fall (Florida Premiere; Africa) takes a penetrating look at endangered African elephants, the criminals who hunt them, and the dedicated heroes who struggle to save them.
SUNSHINE CELLULOID
FLiFF’s commitment to building Florida’s film industry, by showcasing Florida films and Florida filmmakers, continues this year. These Florida features often include special guest appearances and Q & A sessions.
Young marrieds Jonah and Maggie buy their first home in The Happiest Place on Earth (South Florida Premiere) but when Jonah loses his job their mortgage throws their life together into crisis. Then, after a particularly humiliating interview, Jonah heads to the coast to regroup, but never returns home.
What About Love (World Premiere; Haiti-USA) is a Haitian-American film loosely based on Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Romeo and Juliet, set in contemporary South Florida’s Haitian exile community. Director Willys Michel and members of the cast and crew will attend the screening.
Florida Atlantic University students reveal their ink and stories in Stories On The Skin: Tattoo Culture at FAU (Florida Premiere). Writer/producer Susan Rosenkranz weaves their experiences, plus original artworks and score into a revealing portrait of 21st-century tattoo culture.
Time Simply Passes (World Premiere) is a film about the evolution of small-town Florida justice as experienced by James Joseph Richardson, a Florida orange picker wrongfully convicted of murdering his seven children in 1967. After twenty-one years in prison his conviction was overturned due to unique and miraculous circumstances.
Who was Lou Gehrig? (Florida Premiere) Jeff Fogel, a girls’ basketball coach at the Michael-Ann Russell JCC, is diagnosed with ALS. Scared and distraught, Jeff uses his wondrous imagination to battle his daily physical challenges and learns the secret to why Lou Gehrig called himself the “luckiest man in the world.”
Between Myth & History (Florida Premiere) profiles one of the most anticipated events in South Florida, the Florida Renaissance Festival, and the nine people that help create, manage and run it. Vivian Orozco, director of the film and Bobby Rodriguez, director of the Renaissance Festival, will be feted at a party preceding the film.
SHARKS OF WAR: Truth, Tales, and Terror (Florida Premiere; Bahamas and USA). Robert Cantrell and his team dive at night in the waters of South Florida among the three shark species responsible for the worst mass attacks of World War II: the bull, tiger, and oceanic whitetip to understand the behaviors that led to shark attacks on World War II servicemen and learn why the divers found them less to be feared than understood. Director Robert Cantrell and George Schellenger will attend as special guests.
Featuring the only footage ever permitted of two dollar bills being produced at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, The Two Dollar Bill Documentary (World Premiere) tells all about ‘the deuce,’ from its history to the many superstitions surrounding it to the way it’s perceived and used in society. Plus incredible stories about the ways the two dollar bill connects people.
The F Word (World Premiere) explores radical “4th Wave” feminist performance artists using their bodies as subject matter. The female body has proven, and continues to be, central to their practice, and, as a result many of these artists remain marginalized by the mainstream art world.

FLiFF treats Opening Weekend filmmakers to a two-hour brunch cruise down the Intracoastal Waterway on board the Sun Dream luxury yacht Caprice. The Caprice features multiple options for lounging about: inside its air-conditioned cabin; up top under the verandah; aft au soleil or forward, also enjoying the sun and breeze. This relaxing cruise features brunch buffet, Mimosas and bloody Marys.
Monday, November 9, 7:30pm Love the Coopers Christmas Party. Celebrate some holiday cheer, prior to the film, with egg nog, cookies, and a choir performing Christmas Carols.
Tuesday, November 10, 5:30pm The Peter Langone Tribute at Cinema Paradiso-Fort Lauderdale.
Recently, the festival lost a long-time friend, renowned photographer Peter Langone. Peter was also collaborator, sponsor and past Board member of FLiFF. His first poster was created from a photo shoot on Fort Lauderdale Beach in 1998. Peter went on to shoot nine posters and television spots for the festival and almost every film celebrity in town to create a Hall of Fame at Cinema Paradiso-Fort Lauderdale. “Artistically, no one during my the 27 years has contributed so much to the Film Festival. Peter was one of a kind.” – Gregory von Hausch.
Wednesday, November 11, 7:00 pm: Veterans Day M*A*S*H Party at Villa DePalma with actress Loretta Swit. Following Never The Same, join Emmy-winning actress Loretta Swit (Hot Lips Houlihan from TV’s M*A*S*H) at Steve Savor’s magnificent waterfront estate, transformed for the occasion into the 4077th MASH unit. Open bar, buffet and entertainment! A portion of the proceeds benefits Ms. Swit’s no-kill animal rescue, Ayla’s Acres.
Wednesday, November 11, 7:00 pm: Junkanoo Parade & Party. A culturally apt salute to the Festival’s films from the Bahamas, When Pigs Swim (East Coast Premiere) and Gentle Giant: The Andre Rodgers Story, (South Florida Premiere). The Parade takes place from the river to the Cinema Paradiso-Fort Lauderdale for the films followed by the party serving up conch fritters and Sands Beer.
Friday, November 13, 9:00pm: Centerpiece Party at the Sunrise Civic Center Theater’s Breezeway. The City of Sunrise welcomes FLiFF for the sixth consecutive year, hosting the Centerpiece Party following the bittersweet comedy, Silver Skies, starring George Hamilton, Valerie Perrine, Mariette Hartley, Barbara Bain and Alex Rocco. Apples From the Desert, nominated for three Israeli Academy Awards, will be shown at 3:30pm and followed by an Israeli themes party with food and music. At 6:30pm the comedic drama Hill Start will close the weekend at Sunrise Civic Center Theater.

Following FLiFF’s Closing night Film, The Wannabe starring Patricia Arquette, the filmmakers and audience make the short trip to the newly renovated Ritz Carlton-Fort Lauderdale. The new restaurant and bar will welcome all with a fresh, modern ambiance, offering stunning views of the ocean and a perfect setting for people watching. Historical aspects of the area, harkening back to the Prohibition era, when Fort Lauderdale was known as a bootlegger’s paradise, are the inspiration for the party. The hotel will offer heavy hors d’oeuvres and an open bar compliments of Bacardi and Grey Goose.
