Eli Winter (Chicago) & Ana Paz at Sweat Records
Sunday, March 19, 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm
$15
Don’t miss the Miami debut of rising Chicago musician ELI WINTER, who will perform solo arrangements of compositions off his newest self-titled album on Three Lobed Recordings, along with an opening set by ANA PAZ (Miami)! All ages welcome, 4–7PM sharp.
A self-taught guitarist and native Houstonian, Eli Winter has been called a “generational talent” (NYCTaper) for his instrumental music, which has received praise from Pitchfork, The Guardian, Stereogum, NPR, the Chicago Reader, and the Sydney Morning Herald, among others. Winter’s intricate fingerstyle technique and longform flowing compositions have earned him favorable comparisons to pioneering American primitive guitar composer John Fahey, singer-songwriter and Kurt Vile associate Steve Gunn, and Chicago experimentalists Ryley Walker and Jim O’Rourke.
Winter’s debut album, The Time To Come, recorded in Houston in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, uses a deep study of American experimental guitarists to grieve a close friend and cope with the collective trauma of natural disasters. On the strength of this album, The Guardian featured him as an artist to watch in 2020.
His second album, Unbecoming, reaches from the guitar music pantheon to composers Pauline Oliveros and David Grubbs, considering extremes of duration, timbre and recording fidelity, and engaging the writings of AIDS activists Tory Dent and Eric Michaels, whose work inspired the album’s title. Anticipation, an album of acoustic guitar duets with Los Angeles-based musician Cameron Knowler, weaves disparate musical idioms with gorgeous melodies, nodding to its forebears while staking out its own ground. Controlled Burning, a collaboration with Jordan Reyes, features eclectic, exploratory duets for guitar and synthesized instruments.
Eli Winter’s latest self-titled album on Three Lobed Recordings sees the artist further explore his collaborative tendencies while assuming the role of both performer and bandleader. Each of the album’s six tracks features contributions from a venerable roster of contemporary musicians including Cameron Knowler, Yasmin Williams, Jordan Reyes, David Grubbs, Ryley Walker, Tyler Damon, Sam Wagster, and the late trumpeter jaimie branch, among others. The result is a stunning slice of experimental Americana that achieves a delicate balance of timbre and mood, marking a major creative leap forward for the Chicago musician.
Winter has performed at Hopscotch Music Festival, Primavera Sound Festival, Constellation, and Logan Center for the Arts, among many others; collaborators include Daniel Bachman, jaimie branch, Isa Burke, Tyler Damon, David Grubbs, Whitney Johnson, Cameron Knowler, Tara Jane O’Neil, Jordan Reyes, Sam Wagster, Ryley Walker and Yasmin Williams. Winter has toured the East Coast, Midwest, Texas, California, and Europe, and maintains a regular performance schedule in Chicago.
