Taru at Sundy House Opens in Delray Beach, FL
New Florida Cuisine from Executive Chef James Strine
DELRAY BEACH, FL – June, 2020 – Delray Beach’s enchanted historic property, Sundy House, is unveiling their new restaurant concept on June 29th. Taru, named after the mythical god of weather, will feature new Florida cuisine from award-winning Executive Chef James Strine.
The spices and flavor combinations of Strine’s modern cuisine honors the heritage and diversity of Florida’s deep-rooted connection to Caribbean, Latin and Southern American cultures. Taru’s commitment to using locally grown produce, the abundant fish and seafood of the area and Florida-raised cattle, allows Strine to expand on time-honored traditions and techniques.
Strine brings nearly 20 years of experience to his role at Taru, having worked in Palm Beach’s top kitchens including Michelin-Star Chef Daniel Boulud’s Cafe Boulud, The Breakers, and Clay Conley’s restaurants Būccan and Grato, where Strine was awarded the title of “Best Chef Palm Beach County” by the Palm Beach Post.
His menu at Taru offers a selection of raw bar items, light garden fare, playful comfort foods, travel-inspired plates and Sundy classics. Highlights on the seasonal menu include: Crispy Local Fish with Oaxacan mole and corn tortilla, Sugarcane Shrimp with fish sauce caramel and Thai chili; Turkey and Stuffing Croquettes with cranberry mayo and crispy sage; Street Corn Souffle with queso fresco and lime crema; Steamed Carrot Buns with barbecue rabbit and cabbage slaw; and Florida Bouillabaisse with grouper, clams, shrimp, crab, saffron rouille and shellfish broth.
Taru will continue the renowned brunch tradition that has become synonymous with Sundy House. The Savor Sunday Endless Brunch will offer an indulgent mix of Raw Bar items including oysters, shrimp and crab legs; cheese, charcuterie and carved meats; homemade breads and pastries; traditional brunch dishes with a twist including Eggs Benedict, Chicken & Waffles and French Toast from Chef Strine; and decadent desserts. Diners can toast with bottomless mimosas, bloody marys and sangria, which are included with the experience. The safety and comfort of guests is Sundy House’s top priority, so for the time being diners will order from the menu and endless plates will flow generously from the kitchen directly to their tables.
Matching the kitchen’s focus on ingredients, Taru’s bar offers hand-crafted cocktails with fresh-squeezed juices and herbs from their garden. Also available is a diverse wine list with selections of new and old world varietals, and rotating local craft beers.
Built in 1902, Sundy House is located in the heart of Delray Beach’s thriving village by the sea. Guests valet (complimentary) under a grand Royal Poinciana, the oldest documented tree of its kind in Palm Beach County. Beyond the entrance is a true tropical paradise. Diners can meander down quiet coral paths, discovering gazebos and benches hidden amongst more than 5,000 plants and over 500 varieties of foliage from around the world including tropical fruit and flowering trees, edible plants and a bamboo grove. The romantic photo-worthy property also features waterfalls, a koi fish pond and a lush tropical pool offering secluded socially-distanced dining nooks with a canopy of twinkling lights. Indoors, Taru has an expansive Atrium Bar and multiple dining rooms perfect for private events and weddings up for to 110 guests.
