Monthly Health Tip

Boost your brain's overall heath and enhance its day to day functioning by including these foods in a healthy well-balanced diet.

Blueberries - Well known for their role in improving motor skills and overall learning capacity, blueberries are rich in antioxidants that are great for boosting your brain and helping to reverse the effects of aging on the brain. Most berries contain fisetin and flavenoid, which are great for improving your memory and allowing you to easily recall past events.

Leafy Green Vegetables - Vegetables such as cabbage, kale, spinach, collards, turnip greens and others are rich in vitamins, folate, and iron, all of which are essential for memory recall and increasing cognitive activity.

Nuts/Seeds - Rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, folate, vitamin E, vitamin B6 and zinc all of which allow you to think more clearly. Choose seeds and nuts rich in thiamine and magnesium, which are great for memory, cognitive function, and brain nourishment.

Whole Grains - Rich in folate, thiamine, vitamin B6, and zinc, the nutrients found in whole grains increase blood flow to the brain, improving the quality and quantity of brain function and recall.

Fish - Omega-3 rich wild salmon, tuna, and herring help brain function by providing more oxygen, allowing it to retain new information while remembering old information. It also coats neurons with good fat, allowing them to move easier through the brain. Eating one serving of fish a week can decrease your chances of getting Alzheimer's.

:: Boca Raton GreenMarket
Where: Royal Palm Place, intersection of S Federal Hwy & S Mizner Blvd
Time: 8:00 AM
Boca Raton---Grab your shopping bags and head on over to the Boca Raton GreenMarket scheduled for each Saturday from now through May 7, 2011, in the southwest parking lot of Royal Palm Place. Hours are from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm each market day. Now in its 14th year of operation, the Children's Museum will once again oversee the operations, with the support of Investments Limited who owns the site. The location at the intersection of South Federal Highway and South Mizner Boulevard provides easy access and visibility to the thousands of shoppers who frequent the market throughout the season. Plenty of parking is available adjacent to the GreenMarket vendor site.

As with all markets operating in the Palm Beach County area, Boca's GreenMarket has continually been dedicated to local food production and consumption….produce that travels from farm direct to the dining table……and through the process supporting the Florida agricultural industry and the economy of our south Florida area. Each Saturday, fresh locally-grown fruits and vegetables as they become available in their individual growing seasons---along with fresh herbs, soaps & lotions, juices, potted orchids, ocean shells, fresh cut flowers, assorted variety of plants, fresh baked goods, prepared foods, oils & vinegars, gourmet foods, hydroponic and organic foods, fresh fish and seafood, fresh pasta, doggie treats ---are available for purchase. Several of the vendors have participated since the Market began in 1996, with new vendors joining each year. Community service organizations are also on hand from time to time to share information or to promote a special group project.

"Best of all, Boca's GreenMarket has become 'thee' place to visit on Saturday mornings----where friends come together for a quick cup of fresh coffee and where friends depart with
shopping bags filled with the freshest of produce---all taking place in an outdoor market setting in the heart of beautiful downtown Boca Raton," states Poppi Mercier, Executive Director of the Children's Museum. "As is often heard by vendors and shoppers alike, it's just a 'fun' place to be on Saturday morning in a relaxed atmosphere….a place for the entire family to enjoy a few hours in the out-of-doors."

Several special activities, promotions and customer giveaways are planned at various times throughout the Market season. Live music takes place on the Piazza Stage from 10am to Noon.

The Boca Raton GreenMarket is organized by the Children's Museum and supported by The Boca Raton Tribune, Florida Health & Chiropractic Medicine, Aurora Nurses Home Health Care, Inc., Investments Limited, Inc., Costco, Palm Beach County, Farm Credit of South Florida, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, and "FRESH from FLORIDA," a promotional campaign of Florida's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs.

Master Sommelier of The Breakers, Palm Beach, Virginia Philip is opening her first namesake Wine Shop and Academy in early November, located on the corner of Banyan and Narcissus.

At nearly 1,800 square feet, and with 450 personally selected offerings spanning regions all over the globe priced as low as $10, the shop brings Philip's extensive and encompassing experience to the heart of West Palm Beach. The shop will also offer wine education programs utilizing Philip's extensive experience. Programs will range in focus from regional knowledge to food and wine pairings, as well as how to buy wine and build a cellar. Costs for the programs will be $25 to $50 per class, depending on the subject matter. A limited number of eight-week classes will be offered for those looking to immerse themselves in Philip's full range of knowledge.

Opening the store fulfills a long-time goal for Philip. "My career in retail began as a part-time wine clerk in Aspen, eventually leading to restaurant management at the Five Diamond/Five Star Award-winning resort The Little Nell in Aspen, but I loved that first job and promised myself that one day I would own my own store," she says.

Prior to moving to Palm Beach and joining The Breakers, Philip was the buyer for a chain of wine and liquor stores in San Antonio, Texas. She bought wine and cigars for 36 stores, purchasing wines at all spectrums of price points from jug wine to blue chip Bordeaux, Cult California and top end Burgundy. Recruited by The Breakers in late 2000, Philip moved to Palm Beach. The move allowed her to finish her pursuit of the Master Sommelier Diploma as well as be closer to family.
About Virginia Philip:

Philip's keen interest in wine began at an early age, leading her to take a wine course in college and work a summer at a New York State vineyard. She graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1989 with a B.S. in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. Prior to her arrival at The Breakers Palm Beach, Virginia worked at many accredited resorts and restaurants throughout the country, most notably the Five Diamond/Five Star Award-winning resort, The Little Nell, in Aspen, Colorado and was the wine buyer for 36 stores in San Antonio, Texas.

Virginia Philip became the tenth woman in the world to earn the extraordinary accreditation of Master Sommelier (there are now 21). This achievement was complemented when she earned the national title of "Best Sommelier of the United States" in 2002 from the American Sommelier Association. Virginia has also been on the Board of Directors for the Court of Master Sommeliers.

In her tenure as Wine Director for The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida, Philip directed the beverage department for nine restaurants and bars and 14 wine lists, including the resort's prized 1,600-selection list, which has won the Wine Spectator's Grand Award every year since its inception
in 1981.

Philip has also recently been appointed the Wine Consultant for Azamara Club Cruises and Royal Caribbean International Cruises. Working with this company allows Virginia to engage her skill set, working with a wide diversity of wines from across the globe with this icon Cruise Ship Company.

Philip has appeared on "The Today Show" and "Food Network" and has been featured in Food and Wine, Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and Decanter. She has also traveled extensively, broadening her knowledge of wines and spirits in Scotland, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Uruguay, Greece and Canada and throughout the wine regions of the United States.
