:: The World of Giant Insects
Where: Miami Metrozoo
Time: 10:00 AM
Keeping in line with its commitment to entertain as well as educate, Miami Metrozoo presents The World of Giant Insects from January 23 - August 1, 2010. This traveling exhibit, which will be located at the zoo's Dr. Wilde's World, will provide eye-opening insight into the anatomy and behavior of insects we encounter regularly. These animated robotic insects, enlarged 40 to 600 times their actual size, will afford visitors a new up-close perspective on these important creatures.

The exhibit will include a praying mantis (60 times its size), stick insect (120 times its size), beetles (40 times its size), caterpillar (30 times its size), and a locust (70 times its size). Interactive displays with mosquitoes, honeybee, and dragonfly enlarged 600, 200 and 80 times their size respectively will further thrill and engage adults and children alike. In addition, laboratory, "backyard jungle" components and signage will enable everyone to learn in more detail about these fascinating creatures.

The exhibit, produced by Kokoro Dinosaurs, has traveled extensively and entertained numerous crowds at museums, zoos and aquariums throughout the United States.

The World of Giant Insects exhibit will be open every day from 10 a.m. -5 p.m. and is included with zoo admission.

Back by popular demand! The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood will feature a summer season, family-friendly exhibition of new work by internationally acclaimed artist Nathan Sawaya, whose sculptures are made-up exclusively of LEGO blocks. His 2008 show at the Center drew the largest attendance in the 30+ history of ACCH, as well as an abundance of media coverage. This is a show of new work by an artist whose art has proven to ignite the imaginations of both children and adults alike. For "Replay," Sawaya will emphasize the use of recycled LEGO brick in nearly all of his works. The opening reception for this event will be held on Friday, June 4 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m.

:: Beyond the Figure: Abstract Sculpture from the Norton Collection
Where: Norton Museum of Art
Time: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
As a follow up to the highly successful Off the Wall: The Human Form in Sculpture, the Norton Museum of Art has organized Beyond the Figure: Abstract Sculpture in the Norton Collection. As the title suggests the exhibition-drawn from the Norton's American, European and Contemporary collections-will present a grouping of abstract sculpture. Over 20 sculptures are gathered and organized around such themes as "Lines," "Assemblages" and "Vessels." Examples include: Sol Lewitt's modular white cube sculpture and a Howard Ben Tré cast glass and bronze pseudo-architectural element sculpture are featured in "Lines." "Assemblages" includes typical wood constructions works by Louise Nevelson and Nancy Graves' unlikely conglomeration of objects with an industrial feel. And finally, "Vessels" is anchored by a group of 7 Macchia by Dale Chihuly and Ursula Von Rydingsvard 's gigantic carved-cedar bowl.
Organized by the Norton Museum of Art.

On view through September 5...

Inspired by a deep and abiding interest in archaeology, lost civilizations, and the art of illustration, James Gurney invites viewers to enter a whimsical world in which dinosaurs and humans live side-by-side. Recounted in words and pictures in the best-selling book series Dinotopia, the artist's compelling tale has engaged and enchanted readers by inviting them to explore the far reaches of a mysterious destination. Gurney's luminous paintings, beautifully crafted drawings and hand-made models, which are featured in this exhibition, explore the wonders of the distant past through the lens of the imagination.
