Where: Broward Center for the Performing Arts(Aurene Theater)
Thursday, April 5, 2007
Time: 8:00 PM
Saint-Saens' operatic masterpiece of the Old Testament story provides a sweeping, atmospheric musical tableaux of the ancient middle east, and contains some of opera's most famous music, including Dalila's great seduction scene. Samson succumbs and gives and gives up the secret of his great strength. Newly shorn, he is taken captive by the Philistines and blinded, but when he is brought into a celebration where the Philistines and Dalila mock him, he prays for strength one last time. Performed in French with English translations.

American mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves makes her Florida Grand Opera debut as the legendary tempress, following her triumphant Metropolitan Opera performances in the same role. Florida City native tenor Jon Villars, who has earned international accolades in some of opera's most demanding tenor roles, joins her as Samson.

:: Third International Young Dancers Festival- Sat & Sun
Where: Miami & Ft. Lauderdale- see details below
Saturday, April 7, 2007
Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida presents
Third International Young Dancers Festival April 7, 8 2007

Vladimir Issaev is closing the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida season of performances presenting a very different program that is substituting the usual Spring Ballet Gala.

This International Festival is an annual performance by four international ballet companies, structured so that each country hosts the event on a rotating basis. In 2004 and 2005 Denmark was the hosting country, following Poland in 2006. In 2007 it is Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida's turn to bring this festival to South Florida .

The participating companies are: The Wienna Konservatorium Opera House Dance Company ( Austria ), The Fouette Tanz Ensemble ( Poland ), the Odense City Ballet ( Denmark ) and Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida ( USA ) with special guests, the Ballettschule Pirouette ( Germany ).

The idea for these annual, rotating performances came to life after several meetings between four artistic directors with a long history of international dance experience. These professionals, Vladimir Issaev (Florida - USA), Maxim Abzalov (Austria), Beata Ksiazkiewicz (Poland), Bogumila Gauden (Denmark), have worked together in the past as dancers, and maintain an artistic relationship. This has produced a magnificent opportunity for these international ballet masters to showcase the talents of their companies on a world stage.

The program for the performances is very diverse, while Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will be offering a classical and neo classical ballet repertoire, Poland is bringing a ballet mixed with character dance with music of Chopin and a couple of modern pieces.

One of the highlights of the evening will be the performance of Arts Ballet Theatre's dancers Yoshie Oshima and Andrey Konkin dancing "Spring Waters" and a new Pas de deux from Issaev's choreographic work "The Season" which was premiered last summer at the Mariinsky Theater in Russia .

A major honor for the companies and the event will be at 6:30 PM on April 7, when Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally Heyman will present all of the visiting companies with Keys to the County of Miami-Dade.

Newly shorn, he is taken captive by the Philistines and blinded, but when he is brought into a celebration where the Philistines and Dalila mock him, he prays for strength one last time. The 2007 Palm Beach International Jazz festival has expanded from the 2006 preview to include 2 days of world-class jazz entertainment. The festival will feature local artists, up and coming jazz acts, a children's jazz concert and major jazz stars. The outdoor concert will surpass the expectations of the jazz aficionado and general music lover with an experience that can only be described as unlike anything ever in western Palm Beach County.
The Cultural Trust is proud to announce the expansion of our successful Palm Beach International Jazz Festival. With the 2006 premiere, featuring Arturo Sandoval as a smash success with over 3,700 patrons attending, the jazz festival is being expanded for its inaugural year.
With a total of over 20 GRAMMYs represented in this festival, we are proud to have renowned jazz legends performing at the event. "It is a true honor to have these artists in our community. I hope that everyone will come out to see this magnificent show!" said Manuel Bornia, Artistic Director and CEO of the Cultural Trust.
Headlining the event on Saturday is trumpet player Chris Botti, one of today's hottest talents on the pops and jazz instrumental scene. Thanks to his recent PBS concert "Chris Botti and Friends" with Sting, Burt Bacharach and many others, he has received critical acclaim. The evening also features renowned jazz pianist David Benoit and a performance by The Rippingtons, who celebrate their 20th anniversary this season!
Sunday's concert will be an evening to remember. Two jazz giants, Chick Corea & Gary Burton take the stage. With over 15 GRAMMY's combined, these artists are the quintessential jazz masters. Both authorities in their own fields, together they promise a concert of monumental proportions.
The festival will also introduce two new artists to the South Florida scene. Sophie Milman , performing on Sunday, is currently the number one downloaded jazz vocalist on iTunes and has a style all her own. Her self-titled debut album was a breakthrough jazz album of the year and remains in the years top 5 selling albums along side Diana Krall and Michael Buble. Also featured will be artist Lisa Yves and her renowned Jazz for Kids Series that will feature over 50 children each day at the festival. These children will be selected from a week long workshop that Lisa will conduct in Western Community Public Middle Schools.
  • Priority Seating for Patron's Circle Members with tickets purchased by August 31st
  • Special member event for Family Friends of the Trust after the Jazz for Kids Concert and a special Backstage at the Jazz Festival for Patron Circle Members

EarthFest- WaterFest Goes Green-
An Action-Packed Day for Families To Celebrate the Environment
Sunday, April 22 on Key Biscayne
Free & Open to the Community

Global warming, hybrid cars, recycling - these are all topics on the tip of everyone's lips nowadays. But many individuals who wish to make changes in their lifestyles to reduce negative effects on the environment wish to go further. They are interested in learning what is possible in their own communities and households.

On Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, from noon to sundown at Biscayne Nature Center in Crandon Park is EarthFest. "Everyone is invited to a day of free hands-on activities and music, and an expo providing practical information." said Theo Long, the Director of Biscayne Nature Center. "We want everyone to come and celebrate their love for Mother Earth with their neighbors in a fantastic beach location."

"This year we thought we would kick it up a notch!" continued Long. "We have planned a day of activities to empower each and every one of us to keep the world green. Especially in our own community, built on a fragile environment, where everyday actions and personal choices can affect our lives, and everyone around us. It is possible to make lifestyle changes to ensure a sustainable future."

From noon until sundown, visitors to EarthFest can wander an eco-village where environmentally friendly products such as purses, clothing, and plants from local green businesses will be for sale. Many local green non-profit organizations will also be present distributing information, sharing what is being done locally and signing up volunteers.

EarthFest is not just about observing. The Florida Electric Auto Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about the benefits of driving electric vehicles and promoting their adoption, will have a RAV4 electric vehicle on hand and will be offering rides to festival-goers throughout the event.

Musical guests Miami's own DJ LeSpam and the All-Stars will entertain with their unique blend of funk and Afro-Cuban rhythms. They are joined by a terrific roster of bands including Agape, Ana Kampa, Deblois, Marc Berner, and the Earthman Band. The music is non-stop.

Spoken word performances by Drew Dellinger and film screenings will contribute to the lively gathering. Of course, water-related games and activities will focus everyone on conservation. "The festival's main aim, after all, is to educate Miami residents about how to preserve our unique local ecology, so that we can all enjoy a healthy future," said Colleen Ahern- Hettich, Director, Earth Ethics Institute at Miami Dade College, co-sponsor of the 2007 EarthFest celebration.

Recycling is a big part of a sustainable future, and EarthFest does recycling in a big way. EarthFest attendees are invited to bring their old old computers, cell phones, and other electronic equipment (except TVs) to be recycled; RecycledPCParts.com will take this outdated and/or broken equipment and recycle the materials, diverting waste from the landfills.

Reuse is important, too, and EarthFest wants to provide community members a way to give away items such as clothing, toys, home accessories, that are no longer of use to them through the Swap Shack. "It's like a garage sale where everything is free," said Rebecca Carter of greenerMIAMI.com. "People can leave what they no longer want and take whatever they can use. It costs no one any money and saves waste from the landfills."

Recycling inspired the creation of the Main Entrance Gateway for EarthFest. Miami artist Meme Ferre will collaborate with children from North Beach Elementary School to build the structure from recycled shoes. She's also designing the entry to the Concert Green.

Eco tram tours through Bear Cut preserve and nature walks through the Coastal Hardwood Hammock will bring folks up close and personal with the special ecosystem that nourishes us here in South Florida. A Discovery Lab Open activity and rain barrel workshops will involve everyone in useful activities, which will raise their consciousness about the environment.

The Kidz Circle will make recycling and conserving water and the Earth fun for kids of all ages. On hand will be a FREE giant slide, earth painting collages, Fantasy Theater performers, Sponge Bob, Mermaid Face Painting, Holi bodycolor ceremony, and interactive ice sculpting. After all that activity, they'll be hungry. Of course, feasting for the children will involve colorful snow cones and crunchy pop corn. Their own personal DJ Kool will spin the sounds kids love all day long.

EarthFest: WaterFest Goes Green is sponsored by the Biscayne Nature Center South Florida Water Management District, Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department, Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation, Miami Dade College Earth Ethics Institute, Earth-Learning, FUNDarte, GreenerMIAMIi.com, GreenbuildingsMiami.com and the Mango Strut Parade.

The day will start at noon at the North Beach Entrance of Crandon Park at the Crandon Park Visitor's and Biscayne Nature Center, 6767 Crandon Boulevard, Key Biscayne, Fl. 33149.

Admission is free, and there is a $5 parking fee to Miami-Dade Parks & Recreation. A Free Shuttle from Vizcaya Metrorail Station is provided.

:: Pompano Beach Seafood Festival
Friday, April 27, 2007
Pompano Beach Seafood Festival

2007 POMPANO BEACH SEAFOOD FESTIVAL
FRIDAY 5:00PM - 10:00PM
SATURDAY 10:00AM - 10:00PM
SUNDAY 1100AM - 8:00PM

WHERE IS THE FESTIVAL AND WHERE DO I PARK? -- The festival is located at the east end of Atlantic Blvd in Pompano Beach. The main entrance is at the corner of Atlantic and A1A. There are additional entrances on the beach, on Pompano Beach Blvd about 300' south of the Pompano Pier and at Briney Avenue and Atlantic.
There is parking at the municipal lots on the beach across from the pier at N.E. 2nd Street and on Riverside Drive (turn left at first traffic light east of the intracoastal). There is paid parking available in a number of private lots around the beach. There is also parking along Atlantic Blvd. between U.S. 1 and the intracoastal. Free trolley service runs from the parking lots at both Wachovia and Washington Mutual Banks, both found about three blocks east of U.S. 1 on Atlantic Blvd. Beachside parking lots fill up early.
DO YOU OFFER MULTIPLE DAY TICKETS? DO I HAVE TO PAY EACH TIME I COME IN DURING THE DAY? CAN WE BUY TICKETS IN ADVANCE? -- We do offer a 3 day ticket. It may be purchased at the Pompano Beach Chamber of Comerce (2200 East Atlantic Blvd.) and will be available at the Main Entrance at A1Aand Atlantic Blvd. on Friday night. The cost is $20.00. Daily admission is $10.00.
We do not offer advance Daily ticket sales. If you are concerned about long waits for tickets, that rarely occurs. If you should arrive at the main entrance and it is very crowded, walk a block north or south along A1A and then east to the road along the beach. Walk back towards Atlantic and you will find alternate entrances that almost never have any wait.
DO YOU HAVE MORE TO EAT THAN JUST SEAFOOD? - While seafood is the main attraction, there is plenty of good ole American food as well.
IS THERE SEATING AVAILABLE NEAR THE STAGE? -- No. One of the attractions of the festival is that we are on the beach. Just bring a blanket and stake out a piece of sand.
CAN I BRING MY OWN DRINKS? -- Unfortunately, the answer to this one is no. You cannot bring coolers into the festival. This is not a money issue with us (although you are supporting many local charities when you purchase our drinks). In this day and age of insurance regulations and security concerns, we cannot allow you to bring in coolers or other large bags.
WHAT WILL I FIND ON YOUR BOARDWALK BAZAAR? -- Another of our most popular features is our Boardwalk Bazaar (arts and crafts). It is an incredible mix of arts and crafts, clothing, and local businesses. The main area is actually on the beach. Festival volunteers install a 1,200' wooden boardwalk that stretches from the food area north along the beach towards the pier. The vendors actually set up in the sand on either side of the boardwalk. There is an additional area of vendor display along Atlantic Blvd. Between the main entrance and the beach.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE REVENUES FROM THE FESTIVAL? -- The Seafood festival is a not for profit corporation. Revenues benefit a wide variety of charities and civic organizations. It is one of the things that make the festival so unique. This is a largely volunteer driven event. Groups like the Boys and Girls Club, the Boy Scouts, Ely High School, and civic groups like the Greater Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce, the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo, Kiwanis, Rotary, Soroptimists, and others supply volunteers and benefit from the profits. Over the years hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised for all these groups.
ARE THERE ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS? Absolutely. There is a kid's activities areas with games, bounce houses and small rides. Food and drinks are available. There is also a Community Stage in this area featuring local bands, and performance groups. Plus, many of the vendors on the boardwalk feature toys and kids clothing.

:: Pompano Beach Seafood Festival
Saturday, April 28, 2007
